How Cardholders Share Their Digital ID Card

Cardholders can now share their digital ID card as a PDF proof, generated right from the ID123 App, ready to upload, email, or print whenever proof of ID is requested. When an institution enables the feature, cardholders will see an option directly in their ID123 App to share an ID card proof. A file is then generated instantly, so cardholders can create a new one any time they need it.

What’s Included in the Shareable Digital ID Card

The proof is meant to verify that the digital ID card was issued by the cardholder’s institution through ID123. It includes an image of the front of the ID card as well as a scannable or clickable barcode containing a verified credential, including:

  • The cardholder’s information on the front of the card
  • Issuer Information: identifying the institution that issued the card
  • Validation Status: showing if the card is valid or expired
  • Verification Status: confirming the card’s data has been successfully verified against the issuer’s record

That gives the individual reviewing the file a legible, complete record they can trust.

When You Need a Shareable Digital ID Card

Plenty of everyday situations call for a shareable file:

  • Proof of student status for discounts, housing, and enrollment verification
  • First responder and other discount programs
  • Membership verification
  • HR and employment verification systems
  • Any online form or portal that asks to ‘upload a copy of your organization’s ID card’

PDF Proof of the Digital ID gives cardholders a proper, shareable document built to accommodate exactly these requests, even if the recipient has no connection to ID123.

Security: Sharing a Proof Doesn’t Change Your Card

Generating a PDF proof is a deliberate action that does not change how the digital ID card itself behaves. Card data stays exactly as protected as it was, including the existing screenshot and screen-recording safeguards, and the card data in the Verifiable Credential is tamperproof so it can’t be altered. The proof simply provides a sanctioned way to produce a shareable version of the ID card when the situation calls for it.

How Institutions Enable Shareable Digital ID Cards

The new feature is opt-in and configurable per card template. Institutions can enable it for the card groups where it makes sense; for example, a student ID template, while leaving others unchanged. This all occurs from the ID Management System.
